We visited here with friends recently and had the best time. Paul and Alice were absolutely lovely - so friendly and gave us lots of information about the area. The property is right across from their home and we had a perfect balance of privacy but also responsive hosts who were available to check in on us (whether it was offering tools for a flat tyre or giving us feed for visiting the sheep!). The fire had already been lit for our arrival and they provided a lovely selection of the basics (spreads, spices, milk, etc.... and also some eggs which we very much enjoyed at breakfast). The place is basic/rustic but really cosy, with clean communal areas and linen etc. The exterior is also beautiful and the enclosed garden was great for the dogs too. The location is very remote and great for walks etc - which we unfortunately couldn't massively take advantage of due to the weather. Thanks so much for our stay would love to return one day!

We had a lovely, cosy time in this cottage. We really appreciated the kind and considerate hosting and grateful for all the provisions such as the logs, coal, eggs, milk and butter. Alice and Paul kindly had the fire going for our arrival so it was such a warm welcome.
We had an issue with the tv but they fixed the problem instantly. We were able to completely relax in constant peace and solitude in the evenings after exploring the beautiful countryside each day.

Perfect location. Perfect hosts. Perfect cottage... home from home. Roaring Burner welcomed us in on arrival on a damp evening. It is the perfect place to home from. A 25 minute drive to Moffat for essentials and great coffee and service at the retro café. Alice and Paul were amazing especially when our car broke down... thank you. We have recommended heartily to friends and family and we WILL be back. Thank you.

If you're looking for somewhere to truly switch off, Alice & Paul's cottage is where you need to be! It was so peaceful, beautiful and cosy.
Our highlights were playing board games by the fire with a glass of wine in hand, wild swimming in Saint Mary's loch and cycling up Bessie's hill!
Alice and Paul were great hosts, and gave us some great recommendations, particularly for good off-road bike rides. We got a very warm welcome and fresh eggs on arrival!
There are some lovely quiet walks on your doorstep (where you might not bump into another person!) and some others that are worth the drive for. Our dog Nancy loved getting out in the wilderness for the weekend. We loved watching her enjoy splashing in rivers, lochs and streams and exploring lots of woodland.
My partner is going to come back for a solo cycling trip as the roads are so clear here and the views are breathtaking.
We're feeling restored and connected after a few days in this hidden gem!

We had a lovely cosy stay at the Stables Cottage. Alice and Paul's instructions sent before arriving were perfect and helped us find the cottage easily as well as do an online shop before hand which was great being so remote.
The surrounding area was so peaceful, we loved the slower pace and walks nearby which we found from the info in the cottage as well as a visit to the temple and many visits to the community hub - a wonderful place with great food and a lovely small playground.
The small touches such as fresh eggs, milk and jams on arrival was much appreciated.
it was great to be able to help ourselves to wood for the fire and the cottage had everything we needed to make meals and have cosy evenings in.
Thanks so much!

We enjoyed a relaxing few days at Stables Cottage despite the rain. The location is remote & peaceful and the cottage itself is very well equipped and cosy. Unfortunately, the weather meant that outdoor activities were restricted but a trip to Moffat was very enjoyable. Alice and Paul are excellent hosts. Recommended.

I stayed here as I was visiting Samye Ling and as they were slowly opening up from the pandemic, I was unsure of their room availability.
I loved the spacious, well-equipped kitchen with its large table and door to the sunny garden. Also, the first-floor bedroom with all the light flooding through huge windows looking onto the garden (a brilliant meditation space).
Fresh eggs, a variety of jams, fudge, shortbread and milk were waiting for my arrival, and "Faith in Nature" bathroom products.
Thank you Alice and Paul. I really didn't want to leave yesterday! x

We enjoyed staying in stables cottage, and went for some lovely easy walks that were recommended by our hosts a short drive away. We also enjoyed a great ‘secret’ swimming spot that they shared.
The cottage is homely and cosy with a great wood burning stove, and the little garden is great for sitting out in, if the weather is nice. Alice was very friendly and helpful.

My husband and I were in the area for work and we really stumbled on a gem in the village of Esklandmuir. The people were really wonderful and we enjoyed talking to the locals at the cafe (less than 2 miles away) and exploring the area. Alice’s cottage was perfect for us…extremely comfortable with plenty of room to spread out, excellent WiFi for working, and a large kitchen to cook in. Alice was a great host! She had a lovely food basket for us, gave wonderful tips on walks to go on, and even offered us bikes to ride. We loved our stay and would highly recommend.

Stables Cottage is in a really peaceful valley with a great little private and dog safe garden at the back. Thanks, we were made to feel very welcome and there is plenty to do in the area. We loved our walk to the Standing stones and viewing parts of the valley. We hope to return again to see the cottage and area in another season, though Autumn will be hard to beat. Many thanks to Alice and her daughters for a special stay.

Really enjoyable experience, 5 stars! Alice and Paul were so nice, even providing us with fresh eggs from their chickens for breakfast. They also provided us with lots of things that you may have forgotten to bring, such as milk, tea, coffee, towels, shampoo, etc. This was really helpful as the cottage is in quite a rural location. Stables Cottage has a lovely wood burning stove which we found so relaxing (wood was also provided). We had so much fun exploring the local area with our dog during the day and sitting by the fire in the evenings. Would highly recommend for someone looking for a countryside escape, beautiful scenery and lovely walks.

Everything was excellent from the fresh spring water to the warm welcome by our hosts. A cosy fire already burning on our arrival as it was a chilly day.
Everything you could want in the kitchen and little wooden gates to stop the dog going upstairs. Something more places could invest in to help dogs settle in easier!
We saw barely any traffic in the three days we were there both while out walking and pootling around in the car. The walk at Kings Pool was a highlight for us. Beautiful woods and a chance to swim in the river if you’re up to scrambling down the bank to get to the beach.
We’ll be recommending to all our friends, an undiscovered gem. We’ve been to many out of the way places but were constantly surprised by how quiet it was.
If you want Sunday lunch at the cafe in the village make sure you book a week or so in advance. We tried to book at 9am on the day and they were full even though it wasn’t school hols.

The cottage is in the middle of no-where but very easy to find. Go outside in the garden and listen, we did and heard nothing its that peaceful. As for cottage is lovely and finished to a high standard with a great welcome basket. Alice, Paul and the rest of there family are great, full of help and guidance should you have any question. They even allowed our daughter to get hands on with there sheep and lambs which made her holiday. Would we go back yes

Stayed with Alice and Paul for a week and it was a great Scottish getaway. The local area is lovely and quiet and some great walks around the area which Alice helpfully recommended. We would recommend the secret beach for swimming and a great dog swim spot. The house was perfect for all four of us and came with all cooking equipment you could need. We visited Kirkcudbright on a longer day out and it was a beautiful arty village we would recommend!

Such a wonderful stay! The location was wonderful and quiet. The hosts were so welcoming and great to chat with. If you are looking for a place with real peace and quiet, this is definitely the one. Although it looks small on the outside the cottage is very large and the kitchen superb. Our hosts gave us fresh eggs from their chickens and you can really taste the difference. Also we loved making friends with the horses. Our dog loved the large yard to run about in too. Overall, excellent, and we hope to return one day in the future.

I could go on over many pages about our stay in this delightful cottage. Alice and Paul are everything you could wish for as hosts. So helpful and friendly as is the whole family. A welcome basket and the fire already laid was a thoughtful touch and as for comfort we can easily give 10/10. We were after chill out escapism in beaytiful surroundings which is what we got. Would not hesitate to return to or recommend this place. Thank you Alice and Paul for everthing. Willow the greyhound especially thanks you for providing her blankets which ensured her comfort no end .

We had a really relaxing break here: the cottage had everything we needed and was cosy and comfortable. It's a fabulous location, only a couple of hours from Edinburgh/Glasgow/Carlisle but feels really remote, a great place to get peace and quiet. We did some great walks around the Prehistoric Trail, and even our old quite pathetic dog really had an excellent time exploring - she loved the warm fire and safe garden with the hint of sheep in the air!
Cheryl
Beautiful tranquil reatreat surrounded by fields and forest. If you're looking for peace, quiet and beautiful walks in the countryside this is the place to go. Alice and Paul are wonderful hosts, very helpful and welcoming.

Alice and Paul are superb hosts in a beautiful and splendidly remote part of the country. We arrived late at night to a warm stove, home baked shortbread and dog biscuits/towel for the pup. The house is in a beautiful part of Scotland surrounded by trees and sheep. The house is a must visit. We felt very welcome and looked after. Highly recommend.
